General Questions

Frame measurements

Most frames have measurements on the inside of the frame arm in the format 49 - 19    135 ( )
This means the lens diameter is 49mm, the bridge width is 19mm and the arm length is 135.

Use measurements from your existing glasses as a guide to gauge how new glasses will feel.

How to choose a frame that will suit you

There are essentially 5 types of face shapes and the following will help you select something suitable.

Oval Faces

Most frames look good on an oval shape face.

Oblong Faces

Go for frames that cover the width of the face so as to avoid emphasing a longer face.

Round Faces

Go for frames that have straight lines or angles in order to tone down the roundness. Strong dark colours like black help reduce the fullness of a face too.

Square Faces

Go for a frame with a slight curve on it which will compliment the squareness of the face.

Understanding your Prescription

You will be able to enter your full prescription details albeit with certain range restrictions in some fields. The more complete understanding we have of your prescription, the better we can fulfill your order. We apply restrictions to some ranges because it is not always possible to reach the high standards we set ourselves with highly complex prescriptions over a distance based ordering system.

When you enter your details, pay particular attention to the + and - signs that might be entered. If you are unsure or cannot read the prescription contact your optician and them to clarify it for you.

Please refer to the glossary for more information on the meanings and terms used in prescriptions.

Choosing a Lens

All our spectacles are fitted with plastic lenses using either a standard CR39 1.49 refractive index or a 1.6 refractive index for the thinner and lighter lens option. The higher the refractive index, the thinner the lens will be - the 1.6 is approx 30% thinner. This is particularly important for people with high prescriptions as a standard lens would mean a thick edge to the lens.

The standard lens CR39 Standard Plastic (1.49 refractive index) is fine for prescriptions up to +4.00 and -4.00 SPH. Outside this range we recommend the thinner and lighter lenses.

Lens Types

There are 3 types of lens - single vision, bifocal and varifocal.

Single vision is where you need glasses for a single purpose. Either to correct shortsightedness or for longsighted. You could need to correct both and have 2 pairs of glasses, one for each. This may be referred to as reading or distance use. Your prescription will have the information for both if the ADD or Addition value is entered.

Bifocal is where the lens is primarily set for distance but has a section in the lower middle for reading use. This can be shaped as a round segment or D segment.

Varifocals are where the distance and reading elements are blended to create a less noticeable transition from the distance to reading areas of the lens. Please note that varifocals will be created using an average measurement of where to start the transition. We draw your attention to the disclaimer for the creation of varifocal glasses due to their complexity and that this service is provided as 'best estimate' and cannot be expected to be as accurate as a store bought pair.

Lens Coatings

We can offer a variety of coatings to both improve the look of your glasses as well as safety. All our lenses are given a scratch resistant coating.

example of anti reflective coating. See how the eye looks so much clearer in the left hand half of the lens.A UV400 coating will help protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. This could be from VDUs or sunlight.

An Anti Reflective coat will dramatically reduce the amount of glare a lens has. It will help with night time driving and generally gives your eyes a much nicer appearance.

examples of tint options

A Tint is available in 3 levels - Pale, Medium and Sunglasses. We offer tints in a range of colours : Brown, Grey, Green, Blue and Pink. You can roughly see the effect of the tints in the picture to the right.

Transition lenses are ones that change from clear to dark tinted in sunlight. These are ideal for people who regularly go inside and outside or just do not want to carry around a pair of sunglasses in addition to their normal glasses.

A cookie is a small piece of information stored on your computers hard disk and normally looked after by your internet browser. It is primarily used by websites to help personalise the browsing experience by storing and remembering previous things you did. In the case of this website, we store your prescription so you can come back to us in the future and not have to enter your prescription again unless it has changed.

CYL (Cylindrical)

This indicates the amount of correction required for Astigmatism

Tint

This process applies a tint to the lense in the colour of your choice. We offer three level of tint in a variety of colours. Note that we class sunglasses as a tint, so if you are looking for prescription sunglasses, select a sunglasses tint on the frames of your choice.

Transition Lenses

These lenses react to UV light and so go darker in sunshine. Saves on buying a pair of prescription sunglasses.

Varifocal

Lenses are made with 2 presciptions in them with only a slight noticeable change between areas.

VA (Visual Acuity)

The ability to see clearly at a distance. In Europe and the UK this is usually measure at 6 metres. It is usually given as a fraction where the top number is the distance at which the test is performed. The second figure is the level of vision. It is usual to think of 6/6 as normal. In the USA it is known as 20/20 because the distances are measured in feet instead of metres. The larger the number on the bottom of the fraction the worse the vision. Many people are able to see better than 6/6 and figures of 6/5 or even 6/4 are not uncommon.
